1. I have a student that would like to compete in an event at SLC. The member can attend on Monday, but will not be able to attend on Tuesday. Will the member be able to compete on Monday?

If the event is scheduled for Monday, the student will be able to compete. If it is scheduled for Tuesday, they will not.

2. A few students would still like to take some knowledge tests, but will be gone over the actual state days. I told them they would still have to pay the 40 dollars, but could at least take the tests as a means to compete, since they will be gone for break. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct!

3. I have a midterm graduation student, so graduating at semester, would she still be able to compete with us?

Yes, we are happy to have her at SLC! She would just need to register under your chapter affiliation and attend as a member with you.

4. Do advisors have any volunteer responsibilities at SLC?

Yes, at least one advisor or chaperone from each chapter is required to fulfill a volunteer role at SLC. Most of the roles are competitive event lieutenant positions, but there are other roles such as blood drive volunteer and tour chaperone. Training and information will be provided for each role.

5. Do I (the advisor) need to attend SLC with the members?

YES! We require an advisor from the HOSA members' school to attend the conference with them, and if the advisor is not able to attend, another chaperone would have to be approved by the school. The advisor/chaperone is responsible for members' safety and conduct at SLC. Schools should have a student to advisor or chaperone ratio of no greater than 16:1.

6. Will SLC general sessions be live-streamed?

Yes, a live-stream option will be available for parents, friends, and members who cannot attend but who wish to watch the opening and closing general sessions.

7. How can students qualify for the International Leadership Conference?

Students placing in the top 3 of HOSA competitive events (excluding ATC/Nat Geo tests and Recognition Events) qualify to attend the International Leadership Conference (ILC) to compete in that event. ILC competitors are limited to one competitive event, so if students qualify in multiple, they will need to choose one. Fourth and fifth place competitors are alternate qualifiers. Any member, regardless of whether they qualify, can attend the ILC, and any member can participate in Recognition Events and ATC/Nat Geo testing at ILC.

8. How many events can a member participate in?

Members can compete in one testing event that is completed before SLC, one skills-based event at SLC, HOSA Bowl, and unlimited recognition events. Each chapter is limited to two HOSA Bowl teams. If you and your students have any questions about which category events fall into, check out the CE Characteristics spreadsheet.

9. Will I be able to get a medal if I place in a competitive event but cannot attend in person?

You or a member from your chapter MUST attend in person to receive the medal. If you cannot attend awards ceremonies, you can arrange to pick up medals from the Nebraska Department of Education office in Lincoln.

10. Is attending all three days of SLC mandatory?

It is highly encouraged that chapters attend all three days of the State Leadership Conference (SLC). Students will have the most opportunities by attending all three days and seeing speakers, participating in competitions and breakout sessions, and networking with professionals, peers, and educational institution representatives at the expo. The schedule is carefully examined and set each year to maximize attendees' time.

11. Are there regional competitions or qualifying scores for in-person competitions?

Each in-person competition has a cap on the number of competitors that will advance to State Leadership Conference. Please note that we will likely have to use the Round 1 score to determine which competitors will advance in several events depending on registration numbers. The limit exists because at SLC, all competitors in an event are judged by one set of judges, and there are a limited number of time spots.

In recent years, this process has been used in HOSA Bowl, Nursing Assisting, Home Health Aide, Forensic Science, Research Poster, Sports Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Biotechnology. For more information, please view the Competitor Counts spreadsheet

12. Are there any competitive event samples?

Yes, International HOSA has posted sample event scenarios for clinical skills events and sample products for a variety of competitions (i.e. Community Awareness, Health Career Display, Public Health, Research Poster, and more).
